I kind of didn't look that bad today. I mostly wanted to show my usual accessories--my treasured Tom Ford sunglasses and the Dooney and Burke purse that I found at a thrift store that has become my go to purse (even though it kind of smells of old suede).

Also I wanted to show everyone that Penny got a new collar today! She had been wearing the same collar since we got her three months ago and we decided she needed an upgrade. She's a lady now!

Since I don't have work for the next two days I will probably be slovenly. So I'm not going to bother. However, I am in love with Du Juan. More diversity please!

Sometimes I wonder if I'm wearing too many trendy things at once (ruffled bow blouse, fitted vest, tulip skirt), but then again I'm all for outfits that take risks. Life's just too short & serious, let's have some fun with our style, yes?

So the greyscale wardrobe styling continues...this tissue thin pink shirt is perfect for summer, but barely shows up in the photograph. I also discovered, much to my dismay, that part of my shoe is falling off. Fortunately it's something I can glue back into place, since these are the most comfortable heels I own (they're Hush Puppies)!

    Today's:
    Short sleeved blazer: H&M
Dress: vintage, altered (Fairfax Flea Market)
    Red Flats: Bass Outlet

I just LOVE the bow print on the silk fabric of the dress. I'm realizing I have too much black & grey in my wardrobe. Hmm stormy colors to reflect the last two years?

Today I woke up to a gross rainstorm, however the day got progressively nicer! I went thrift store shopping with Joanne who was in town for the weekend and we made a killing. I got a great pair of boat shoes I can't wait to wear, a cute flowery dress, and a little boy's polo. I think Penny will become a Things We Wore regular.

I've been taking Penny to obedience classes. Obviously, they're marginally effective. My hair is out of control, I need to go to Great Clips (what's up $14.00!) and get a trim. Work today, wee!

Oh man, I'm not big on accessories but I really want this bracelet like crazy. I try to keep accessories pretty simple because I'm poor and I don't need another category of things to lust after but every once in awhile I get all blood lusty for one type of accessory. Right now I think it might be bracelets.

    Slip: Old Navy
    Vest: F21
    Flats: H&M

I finally found a fitted black vest! I'm sorry to say that I had to finally cave and head into F21 (which I really really really do not advocate doing) to get the perfect fitted vest, since I can't seem to find it anywhere else. Likely, I'm just a few seasons behind 'cause when you can find different versions of it at F21, then you know the trend is close to worn.

Out of trend or not, I don't care since I found a piece that seems to have been missing from my wardrobe. It pulls together so many polished looks, creating a waist and silhouette in a sea of baby doll & empire waist. You know how much I love that hourglass shape.

I really love this AA dress -- it's originally a halter dress, but you can wear it sixteen different ways. Just watch the video. Always love a piece that can masquerade for several others. I dreamed up combining the ruffled, striped red shirt with this jumper-esque version of the dress last night, when I was feeling totally stumped and bored with my wardrobe. You might be able to tell I'm going through a circus phase...

    Getting Feisty

    Dress: H&M
    Slip: Anthropologie
    Belt: flea market
    Flats: H&M

Went to see Feist at the Hollywood Bowl with some friends tonight -- she's kind of low energy as a performer. It's hard to fill all that space at the Bowl, and we definitely had cheap seats in the back with all the other winers & diners, but even during 1234, it was meh. I have to be honest and confess that I didn't really wear these flats to the concert -- I would have worn them if we were just parking and walking straight in. Instead, I wore my trusty Rainbow sandals (take the girl out of San Diego but you can't take the San Diego out of the girl) for the uphill, mile-long walk from parking to the Bowl.

Oh and I shrunk the purple dress in the dryer recently -- I was devastated. It used to reach past the first tier of lace. Le sigh. At least it still fits.

    What I've learned
    3 comments

I think not only has posting outfits been fun (if I could, I would probably just wear mumuus all day), but it has really taught me to dress for my shape and feel comfortable about what size I am. Maybe I'm just at the point of not caring about numbers or maybe it's because I live in Minnesota (highly likely) but if I go to H&M and have to buy a size 10 pant and a large shirt, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. All I care about is the way it fits and whether it's appropriate for my body.

I'm not the smallest person nor am I the biggest but I know I have problem areas: a little pear shaped, thick arms (Hilary Duff, I feel you!), and a butt too big to allow me to wear short skirts or dresses. But I'm not lamenting my faults, everybody's got them! You just gotta work with what you have. However this is what I've learned for me:
    • Thick upper arms: Avoid tank tops, wear 3/4 length sleeves or sleeves that hit the elbow, look into good slimmer fit jackets, steer clear of large chunky knits like the plague, a nice shirt rolled up always looks crisp, unless it looks like you got it from the business section at Old Navy then that just looks like "I got out of college and I'm going to my first job interview."
    • Pear shaped: A-lined skirts are the bomb, especially ones that hit a few inches above the knee, avoid pleating around the hips that will just it worse, tread carefully in tunic territory because it will make you look pregnant and/or shapeless, buy things that cinch at the waist because it's sexaaay, when in doubt empire waist it up!
    • Big ol butt: Be careful when buying shorter dresses, you have to do the bend over "will I moon everyone" test. Or just don't bend down to get anything and make someone else do it. Omg wear supportive underwear, seriously. Nothing is grosser than a woman with a big butt wearing a thong and tight non-jean pants. REIGN IT IN.
I don't think you have to be a slave to size-2 and under fashion. Do you! Do what looks good on your body.

    Casual Everyday

    Scarf - Neil's
    White Blouse - Old Navy
    Jeans- Old Navy
    Gladiators - Buffalo Exchange

First thing's first. I think I've finally come to a point in my life where I might actually start valuing quality over quantity. I KNOW, what the milestone. Except for jeans, I refuse to pay more than $50 bucks for jeans. But other things like shirts and stuff. I got this white safari type shirt at Old Navy for five bucks, but it has given me nothing but grief from trying to iron the shit out of it and it's STILL really wrinkly. NEVER AGAIN Old Navy or Forever 21! NEVER AGAIN! Unless it's jersey, then no one really gives a shit. But H&M, I still love you. No worries. Also I think I'm breaking a cardinal rule of "What Not To Wear" proportional dressing--making my legs look shorter than my torso. I'm also trying out the gladiator straps over the jeans trend. It kind of makes me feel like a jack ass so I'm probably going to untuck them now.

    My Favorite Shoes

    July 17, 2008

    Cynthia Steffe top: Buffalo Exchange
    Pants: H&M
    Heels: vintage

The top was a recent find at the Buffalo Exchange on La Brea, though I noticed too late that it had come with a seemingly permanent sweat stain under the arm! Yuck! I washed it a couple times and its seemed to mostly come out; I'll dry cleaning it once and see what I can do. It might be too much for a germaphobe like me to bear, so it might go into the sell back/give away bag.

Secondly, I've always wanted to share this pair of heels -- they're among my top three favorite shoes in my collection. They're chewed up around the bottom of the heel, but they're an amazingly perfect cursory illustration of my style (vintage, feminine, bows, muted deep fall tones, librarian chic):

I found them at the thrift store that was on my college campus three years ago. My biggest regret in life is that I didn't buy its sister pair, which were the exact same shoes in my size, in black. They were only $3! What was I thinking?! Obviously I didn't have my priorities in order.

    Prosaic Style

So during my moratorium on shopping, it may appear that I have also placed a hold on showcasing new outfits. Not so. I will confess to a short bout this week of being overwhelmed at work & with quarter-life-crisis stuff. All that baggage has a way of draining a girl; when faced with all the doors that are open or pounding on ones that appear shut, I just want to flop face down on my bed. I do things I'm not proud of: pouting, gorging on hours of pointless tv, taking it out on others who don't deserve it, repeating outfits.

However, I've also been browsing through a growing list of bookmarked style blogs that are endlessly inspiring, and collecting inspiration images - both for style, for art, and for life. Today I discovered the Conde Nast shop's gallery of Vogue covers - dating as far back as the early 1910s! What I love most is that these are evidence of the golden age of fashion illustration in a time not-so-long-ago. I'm still crossing my fingers that illustration is still gearing up for a renaissance, and not just plateauing right now in a sea of mass-produced, screen printed tees at Urban Outfitters.

all images & prints found in the Conde Nast store

I love the seafoam green frock of the girl in the top right image, but I'd lose the harem pants. The lime green lines are fantastic. In the top left image, I'm just amused with the fact that the woman is riding a white peacock. The bottom right image is from the 50s, but is betraying a little fun and whimsy (dare I say??) of Vogue at the time by playing with the type. And of course, I want that fabulous peppermint candy striped coat on the woman in the bottom left cover.

The photographs of today's Vogue are lacking the style of illustrated covers, but some shoots really do exemplify why photography is now the preferred medium - pushing whimsical Fashion with a capital F into epic images. I'm thinking of the Drew Barrymore Beauty & the Beast themed shoot, and this month's Nicole Kidman spread.

So after I posted that picture I actually changed out of it because the espadrilles were kind of making my toes numb (SAD FACE) and the skirt's elastic started to loosen to the point where it was no longer feasible to use it outdoors. Although you bet your ass I'm going to be wearing that skirt to buffets and the Minnesota State Fair. And I thought, well might as well throw the baby out with the bath water and wear a whole new outfit. Weee! Also for Kathy, here is a closeup of the espadrilles. Cute but painful.

I shortened the length of the skirt, and I totally jacked up the tension on my sewing machine trying to learn how to hem on stretchy polyester. In the end it all turned out well for the dress, but if anyone knows what setting I should use for stretchy material...let me know. Stylewise, I love this dress! I need more pattern and saturated color in my life!

Dress worn as skirt: Urban Outfitters
    Belt: Reference
    Top: Target
    Shoes: Seychelles

I recently rediscovered and fell in love again with this folk art belt that's been hanging in the back of my closet for ages now. Turns out it was the perfect way to negotiate this dress I'm wearing as a skirt. I love the color and fabric of the dress, but it's a medium and far too large for me. I couldn't resist the sale price though, so I brought it home and have been scheming of ways to wear it. It also looks better with the back in the front, which is how I'm wearing it here. I just love remixing old wardrobe pieces back into my daily wardrobe; it's the kind of styling and shopping I can afford!
